I Am My Mother s Abuser - 2054 Words

Vasquez 4 became my mother s abuser. He would yell at her, calling her outside of her name as well as beating her. I witness it all. She told me that it only happens because she wouldn t listen or because she had done something wrong. But none of that made sense to me. Moving along with my adolescence years, mine and my mother s relationship drifted further and further apart. I found myself in my own physically abuse relationship at the age of fourteen till seventeen. When I look at myself, I see so much of my mother and the women she is. These problems do not start to be resolved until the daughter (June) starts to learn more about where and how her mother (Suyuan) was raised, making her understand and accept their differences. There are many themes the author tries to express to the reader through their Vasquez 5 relationship, such as finding life’s importance, understanding family as well as oneself, and making t he right choices. June and her mother Suyuan have very different feelings and beliefs. This causes the majority of their conflicts. Suyuan has been through a lot of tragic and emotional events in her life. June feels since her mother doesn’t talk about her past then she feels she has no idea who her mother actually is. Suyuan has lost her whole family, and two daughters because the war in China. She fled to America in hopes of forgetting her horrible past and starting fresh with her new family in America. All she wants is the very best for her daughter. So what Suyuan does is instill these values in June telling her she can do and become anything that her heart desires and that she is special. So Suyuan begins to push June into different activities such as dance, and piano. June finds her words encouraging and takes them very serious. After being pushed
